بدأ هذا العصر بعد دخول نابليون بونابرت لمصر إذ جاء ببعثة علمية، وأحضر معه المطبعة، وبعد ذلك تم تسيير رحلات علمية إلى أوروبا وبدأت جهود المحدثين في تجديد الأدب العربي لا سيما في الشعر، فكان من رواد هذه الفترة: أحمد شوقي ومحمود سامي البارودي.[١١]
وقد بالغ بعض علماء المئة الثانية فظنوا أن الشعر قديم جدا فنسبوا إلى عاد شعرا بل نسبوا إلى آدم عليه السلام بيت شعر حين قتل هابيل قابيلَ:

أما المثل، وكان الأحق أن يكون بلهجة القبيلة المحلية لطبيعة وظيفته، فإن الاطمئنان إلى لفظه أعسر. وقد وصلت عن هذه الفترة أيضاً أحاجي وقصص حيوان، وقصص عن أيام العرب، نشك في نصها ونطمئن إلى وقائعها، وإلى فنية التركيب والبناء، وقد نطمئن إلى بعض فقراتها، وإلى الشعر الذي يحليها.
